Fair Housing - It's Not an Option, It's the Law!
America, in every way, represents equality of opportunity for all persons. The rich diversity of its citizens and the spirit of unit that binds us all symbolize the principles of freedom and justice upon which this nation was founded. Equal access to rental housing and homeownership opportunities is the cornerstone of this nation’s federal housing policy. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) enforces the Fair Housing Act and other federal laws that prohibit discrimination and the intimidation of people in their homes, apartment buildings, and condominium developments – and nearly all housing transactions, including the rental and sale of housing and the provision of mortgage loans and homeowners insurance.
It is HUD’s mission to promote non-discrimination and ensure fair and equal housing opportunities. Housing and housing-related activities that are based on an individual’s race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or disability are violations of The Fair Housing Act, and HUD will vigorously pursue those persons who violate the nation’s fair housing law.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or disability not only in the sale or rental of dwellings but also in the advertising of dwellings, provisions of brokerage services, making or purchase of residential mortgage loans and making loans available.
If you feel that you have been the victim of illegal housing discrimination please contact the Baltimore HUD Fair Housing Center at (410) 209-6640 or visit the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) web site.
